Leopold Museum shows exhibition of nominees for Ö1's talent grant supported by The Vienna Insurance Group. Simon Lehner wins this year's advancement award, Sara Lanner receives Ö1's 2020 audience prize.

This year’s annual talent grant for visual arts presented by the Austrian radio station Ö1 was awarded on 28th October 2020 at the Leopold Museum to Simon Lehner, a photography and time-based media student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Simon Lehner creates his works from an autobiographical core based on photographic archival material, which he expands through digital image generation with lost, repressed and imagined elements. His series of works comprise pigment prints, 3D animation videos and image-based sculptures.

Ö1’s audience prize was awarded to Sara Lanner, who studies performative art at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. A performer at the intersection of visual arts and dance, she addresses the body and its manifestation as social choreography and sculpture. Her works aim at combining performative and choreographic approaches, thus broadening both the fields of visual arts and contemporary dance.

“We are delighted to afford both the two winners, Simon Lehner and Sara Lanner, as well as the two further nominees for the 2020 Ö1 talent grant, Juliana Lindenhofer and Camille Holowka, the opportunity to present their works in a museum. Thanks to the generous support of the Vienna Insurance Group, winners of the Ö1 grant receive the opportunity to dedicate themselves intensively to their creative work. With this group exhibition at the Leopold Museum we hope to contribute to making these young, emerging artists visible.” Hans-Peter Wipplinger, Director of the Leopold Museum

Applications for the Ö1 talent grant were submitted at the four Austrian art universities in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg (Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, University of Applied Arts Vienna, University of Art and Design Linz and Mozarteum University Salzburg). The advancement award, with a prize money of 10,000 Euros, was first presented in 2008.

The works by the nominated artists Camille Holowka, Sara Lanner, Simon Lehner and Juliana Lindenhofer are showcased at the Leopold Museum from 29th October 2020 to 5th April 2021 as part of an exhibition curated by Philippe Batka (curator of the Art Collections of the Vienna Insurance Group), Verena Gamper (curator, head of the Leopold Museum Research Center) and Hans-Peter Wipplinger (Director of the Leopold Museum).
