2015: ART REBELS AT THE LEOPOLD MUSEUM

15.12.2014

Egon Schiele’s muse “Wally”, art superstar Tracey Emin, radical German Expressionists, highlights and new works by Peter Sengl

The core of the Leopold Museum’s collection is the most eminent compilation of works by Egon Schiele in the world. The fact that the renowned institution in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, which has been visited by around 350,000 art lovers this year, is a competence center on Egon Schiele becomes apparent once more in its program for 2015, which has been presented by the Directors of the Leopold Museum Franz Smola and Peter Weinhäupl.

Egon Schiele’s muse: exploring the life of Wally

The first exhibition to open in 2015 is dedicated to “Wally”, Egon Schiele’s female companion, who is known to a wide audience especially through Schiele’s masterpiece “Portrait of Wally Neuzil”. The exhibition “WALLY NEUZIL. Her Life with Egon Schiele”(27-02 to 01-06-15), curated by Diethard Leopold, Stephan Pumberger and Birgit Summerauer, explores the dramatic life of Walburga “Wally” Neuzil (1894-1917), who for about five years was Schiele’s model, muse and intimate friend.

Tracey Emin: large exhibition of the rebellious artist in Vienna

In her exhibition at the Leopold Museum curated by Karol Winiarczyk and Diethard Leopold, the rebellious British artist Tracey Emin (born in 1963) also addresses the oeuvre of Egon Schiele. Entitled “TRACEY EMIN – EGON SCHIELE. Where I Want to Go” (24-04 to 14-09-15), the presentation, which features more than 80 works, is the first comprehensive exhibition in Vienna of this eminent international artist who recently showcased her works at a large presentation at the renowned White Cube Gallery in London. The paintings, drawings and installations by Tracey Emin presented in the exhibition will be complemented by her personal selection of rarely shown Schiele works from the Leopold Private Collection.

German Expressionists at the Leopold Museum: the avant-garde of Modernism experiencing “a rush of color”

In the autumn, the exhibition “A RUSH OF COLOR. Masterpieces of German Expressionism” (09-10-15 to 11-01-16), presented by the team of curators Tayfun Belgin, Otto Letze, Franz Smola and Ivan Ristić, will showcase outstanding paintings and drawings from the eminent collection of the Osthaus Museum in Hagen, which was founded by the important collector and Schiele connoisseur Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874-1921). Works by representatives of the artists’ association “Die Brücke”, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller and Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, paintings by “Der Blaue Reiter” artists Alexey von Jawlensky, August Macke and Franz Marc as well as works by Christian Rohlfs illustrate the German avant-garde’s departure into Modernism. The exhibition is complemented by works from the Leopold Museum and from the Leopold Private Collection.

Unfathomable and analytical: Peter Sengl’s multi-layered realities

With “SENGL PAINTS. A Retrospective”(30-10-15 to 08-02-16), the Leopold Museum will for the first time present a cross-section of the multi-layered, erotic-ironic oeuvre of the Austrian painter Peter Sengl (born in 1945), which will include entirely new works by the artist. Sengl is a brilliant, unfathomable and analytical visual narrator for whom reality is more real than oneiric worlds such as those encountered in Viennese Modernism. His many allusions to art historical works are as significant as his self-portrayals and the titles of his works which, as literary miniatures, have become the signature of his oeuvre. For the Leopold Museum’s exhibition curated by Carl Aigner, Peter Sengl has created a special series of paintings in which he addresses works from the museum’s collection.

The eighth ART AUSTRIA: art fair presenting eminent Austrian art
