The Leopold Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive and eminent collection of works by Egon Schiele and further houses numerous chief works by his contemporaries, including Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl and many other important exponents of “Viennese Modernism”. The collection further comprises excellent examples of 19th-century-painting, including works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Anton Romako and Emil Jakob Schindler, as well as paintings and drawings by renowned Austrian artists from the interwar period. Complemented by Jugendstil and Wiener Werkstätte artisan craftwork and furnishings, as well as by an extensive mixed lot of traditional art from Africa and Oceania, it currently comprises more than 6,500 artworks. Presenting 340 of the collection’s central works, including paintings, drawings, posters, items of furniture, graphic designs and examples of artisan craftwork, the 368-page publication Masterpieces from the Leopold Museum affords a representative overview of the treasures comprised in this multi-faceted collection.
