The first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Carl Spitzweg in Austria focused explicitly on the socio-critical aspects of his oeuvre documenting the schisms and conflicts of his times, rather than on the notions of tranquility and petit bourgeois idylls commonly associated with the Biedermeier era. This exploration of Spitzweg’s oeuvre revealed the topicality of his themes, which are reflected in the 21st century’s “Generation Biedermeier”. This was highlighted with ten precisely placed interventions by Erwin Wurm in which he deployed humor as a weapon.
