Leopold Museum: Schiele masterpiece “brought to life”

18.06.2018

The Leopold Museum decided to hoist the Pride flag and treated spectators to something truly special

Celebrating the museum’s “Pride Special” on 12th June, the birthday of Egon Schiele (1890-1918), the artist’s famous Self-Portrait, also called “Yellow Nude” was “brought to life”.
Marking the occasion of Vienna Pride 2018 with its motto “love, respect and solidarity”, the bodypainting artist Manuela Rosa Maderthaner transformed the actor Sebastian Berchtold during a live action at the museum’s atrium, which lasted several hours, into a tableau vivant, thus creating a living Schiele masterpiece.

The Expressionist painting measuring approximately 150 x 150 cm Seated Male Nude (Self-Portrait), created by Egon Schiele in 1910, is a central work of fin-de-siècle art and currently one of the main attractions of the exhibition “Egon Schiele. The Jubilee Show”. Having already been attended by more than 190,000 visitors, the Schiele exhibition is shown at the Leopold Museum until 4th November.

Once the elaborate body art was completed, Sebastian strolled out of the MuseumsQuartier and right across the city center to the Pride Village on Rathausplatz. A promotor handed out “Pride Special” cards affording visitors reduced admission to the museum. Another great success were the museum’s “Pride Special” guided tours with champagne reception on 7th June, which sold out straight away.
