Heike Eipeldauer named new Head of Collections; Verena Gamper new Head of Egon Schiele Documentation Center.

From 2^nd January 2018 two renowned art historians will join the team of curators of the Leopold Museum. Heike Eipeldauer will assume the role of the new Head of Collections while Verena Gamper will take over the Egon Schiele Documentation Center. The Leopold Museum’s Director Hans-Peter Wipplinger emphasizes that both Heike Eipeldauer and Verena Gamper have “great scientific expertise and a contextual understanding of different art historical eras” – two determining factors for their appointment.

Director Wipplinger on the appointment of the two new members of the museum’s research department: “I am delighted that our museological team will be significantly enriched through the appointment of two committed and successful art historians. I have been following their work as curators for years and value their great expertise in drafting exhibition concepts as well as their contextual understanding of art historical eras with a special emphasis on Classical Modernism and contemporary art.”

Mag. phil. Mag. jur. Heike Eipeldauer(born in 1978 in Vienna) studied art history and law with an emphasis on cultural law in Vienna and Dijon. The designated Head of the Leopold Museum’s Collection worked as a research assistant from 2001 to 2004 for the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien and from 2004 acted as a curator for Classical Modernism and contemporary art at the Kunstforum Wien. Since 2011 she was additionally in charge of maintaining and developing the Bank Austria art collection. With the Kunstforum Wien, Heike Eipeldauer curated trend-setting monographic exhibitions on Georges Braque (2008), Meret Oppenheim (2013/14), which was also shown at the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, and at LaM, Lille, Georgia O’Keeffe (2016/17), also shown at the Tate Modern and at AGO, Toronto, as well as most recently on Gerhard Rühm (2017), along with various themed exhibitions, including Eros in der Kunst der Moderne (2007), Augenschmaus – Vom Essen im Stillleben (2010) and Künstlerpaare der russischen Avantgarde (2015/16 and 2017). Heike Eipeldauer taught at the University of Vienna and is the editor and author of numerous scientific publications.

Mag. phil. Verena Gamper(born in 1977 in Merano) studied art history as well as cultural and social anthropology in Vienna, Berlin and Rome. As a research assistant she worked on numerous exhibitions on modern and contemporary art, including Francis Bacon und die Bildtradition for the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel (2003/04), Jean-Michel Basquiat at the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris (2010), Georges Braque. Pioneer of Modernism at the Acquavella Galleries New York (2011), Warhol – Basquiat: Collaborations for the Arken Museum of Modern Art Copenhagen (2011), and many others. In 2013/14 she worked on the research project Hagenbund: ein internationales Künstlernetzwerk in Wien 1900 – 1938 of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. Verena Gamper has curated numerous exhibitions, including Mark Dion. Concerning Hunting, which was shown at the Arhus Kunstbygning, among other locations, as well as from 2014 at the Kunsthalle Krems. Verena Gamper has published a large number of scientific publications and is the author of numerous essays.
