Schiele Master Drawings at the Leopold Museum
Exclusive guided tour of rarely exhibited graphic works by Egon Schiele and special presentation on the secrets of paper restoration
Taking part in this year’s “Weekend of Graphic Art” held on Saturday, 12th and Sunday, 13th November, the Leopold Museum invites visitors to a presentation of Schiele’s graphic works compiled especially for this occasion, while also affording insights into the methods of paper restoration.
Marking this emphasis on graphic works, the Leopold Museum presents a selection of rarely shown works on paper by Egon Schiele compiled by the Curator of the Collection Franz Smola.
“For the ‘Weekend of Graphic Art’ we have selected a range of rarely exhibited works on paper by Egon Schiele from our comprehensive collection, which is arguably the most eminent private compilation of Austrian graphic art from the 19th and 20th centuries. All of them show rare landscape motifs, such as a first draft for ‘Dead City’ created in 1907, the ‘Sun Tree’ of 1910 or the 1913 ‘construction drawing’ for a Krumau cityscape”, explains the Director of the Leopold Museum Hans-Peter Wipplinger.
On the occasion of the ‘Weekend of Graphic Art’, Egon Schiele’s drawings are embedded into the current presentation of the collection entitled “The Magic of Landscapes. From Waldmüller to Boeckl” which will be on display until 6th February 2017 and showcases select examples of Austrian landscape painting compiled by Elisabeth Leopold. The exhibition features paintings from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century by artists including Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Anton Romako, Carl Moll and Koloman Moser, as well as numerous watercolors by Rudolf von Alt, Thomas Ender and Herbert Boeckl.
The Curator of the Collection Franz Smola on the presentation: “Landscape motifs play a vital role in Egon Schiele’s oeuvre. During his many visits to Krumau, his mother’s hometown, he repeatedly captured views of the streets and the rural surroundings of this picturesquely situated small town.” Mostly created using pencil, the drawings are characterized by scant, often highly reduced strokes. Only very few of these landscape motifs were done in color.
On Saturday, 12th November at 2 pm Franz Smola will host the special guided tour “Landscape Drawings and Landscape Watercolors by Egon Schiele”, providing insights into this exclusive presentation of high-quality works.
On Sunday, 13th November at 11 am the Leopold Museum invites visitors to take part in a fascinating special presentation called “Insights into the Secrets of Paper Restoration” hosted by Monika Sadek-Rosshap and Violetta Miller, the Leopold Museum’s expert art restorers. By means of select objects they will demonstrate the various methods available for the conservation and care of artworks on paper. Visitors will learn how torn edges can be glued back together, whether yellowed paper can be whitened, whether crumpled or wavy paper can be smoothed, and when it is necessary to deacidify paper. The restorers will also offer advice on how to store drawings, watercolors and prints, and will explain which works are especially sensitive to light.
While this year’s “Weekend of Graphic Art” marks the eighth year of this international initiative, this is the first year that four renowned Viennese institutions, the Albertina, the Jewish Museum, The Graphic Collection of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as well as the Leopold Museum, are taking part in this event spanning collections from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Academy’s Graphic Collection has acted as initiator of the “Weekend of Graphic Art” in Vienna and as of this year is a member of the network of graphic collections “Netzwerk Graphische Sammlungen”.
