LEOPOLD MUSEUM: OPENING OF EXHIBITION CELEBRATING PETER SENGL’S 70TH BIRTHDAY

80 paintings and drawings by the artist on display from 30^th October

Vienna (OTS) – On Thursday, 29^th October, a comprehensive retrospective of the artist Peter Sengl’s oeuvre opened at the Vienna Leopold Museum. The former director of the Volkstheater, Michael Schottenberg, who is close friends with the artist, penned a humorous and trenchant speech especially for the exhibition, which he delivered to the opening guests and which is also printed in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition.

The exhibition’s curator Carl Aigner compiled a selection of some 80 paintings and drawings by the artist, which will be on display from 30^th October to 8^th February at the Leopold Museum. Featuring examples from all periods of Sengl’s oeuvre, from the 1960s to the present, this presentation provides an overview of Sengl’s consistently representational and figurative work. The artist created a series of works especially for this exhibition at the Leopold Museum, in which he superimposed his self-portrait directly onto paraphrases on works from the Leopold Collection, thus appropriating masterpieces such as Gustav Klimt’s "Death and Life" and Egon Schiele’s "Two Squatting Women".

Hundreds of guests celebrated Peter Sengl, first and foremost his wife Susanne Lacomb-Sengl and their daughter Deborah Sengl. The chairman of the board of directors of the Leopold Museum Private Foundation SC Helmut Moser and the board members Elisabeth Leopold and AK director Werner Muhm attended the opening, as did the new directors of the Leopold Museum Gabriele Langer and Hans-Peter Wipplinger, also SC Andrea Ecker, head of the Arts and Culture Division of the Federal Chancellery, the head of the Vienna Tourist Board Norbert Kettner, the ORF radio director Karl Amon, the Curator of the Collection of the Leopold Museum Franz Smola as well as numerous artists. Also in attendance were the state prosecutor Walter Geyer, Hans Raumauf, president of the Association of Friends of the Leopold Museum and Leopold Birstinger, vice-president of the Association of Friends of the Leopold Museum, among others.
