Successful Exhibition on Display Until 21 June – Extended Opening Times Until 9 pm – Conservation Talk Opens Courbet Finale

The exhibition Gustave Courbet. Realist and Rebel at the Leopold Museum has been delighting visitors since 19 February 2026. Some 130,000 exhibition-goers have visited the first comprehensive Courbet retrospective in Austria to date. The successful exhibition is only on display until Sunday, 21 June. In order to afford as many art enthusiasts as possible a final chance to visit the exhibition, the Leopold Museum will stay open until 9 pm from Thursday, 18 June to Sunday, 21 June.

The Courbet finale kicks off with the event Behind the Scenes. Gustave Courbet and the Restoration of a Masterpiece on Thursday, 18 June, held in cooperation with the French Embassy in Vienna. Starting at 7 pm, international experts will afford insights into the restoration of Courbet’s monumental painting A Burial at Ornans (1849-1850) from the Musée d’Orsay, as well as into the conservation work that was carried out for the exhibition in Vienna.

The lectures are held in English, admission is free. The event is already fully booked, but it is possible to put your name on our waiting list at anmeldung@leopoldmuseum.org.
