THE LEOPOLD MUSEUM AND THE CHAMBER OF LABOUR VIENNA HOST “YOUTH DISCOVERS VIENNA 1900”
15.12.2025
NEW FREE ART EDUCATION PROGRAMS – FOR THE FIRST TIME ALSO FOR CHILDREN FROM VIENNA AT KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL LEVEL. CONTINUATION OF THE MUSEUM’S SUCCESSFUL COOPERATION WITH AK WIEN
Continuing its successful cooperation with the Chamber of Labour Vienna (Arbeiterkammer Wien – AK Wien for short), the Leopold Museum will be able to keep offering numerous art education programs on the theme of Youth Discovers Vienna 1900. In the school year of 2025/26, children living in Vienna will once again be treated to interesting and exciting art education programs free of charge, including free admission to the museum – “powered by AK WIEN”. This year, the museum offers newly devised Youth Discovers Vienna 1900 workshops geared towards children at kindergarten and preschool level.
The workshop Multicolored Play of Forms allows children to become little artists and to discover the variety of patterns and shapes in art around 1900. In the new workshop Mystery! Between Science and Magic!, pupils from all types of schools, aged 12 or older, are invited to investigate the hidden mysteries and inexplicable phenomena explored by artists at the turn from the 19th to the 20th century – a program to coincide with the temporary exhibition Hidden Modernism. The Fascination with the Occult Around 1900 which will be on display until 18 January. Our programs have been devised for primary school students with a high percentage of pupils who speak German as a second language, as well as for students attending secondary schools, polytechnic secondary schools and vocational schools who do not have ready access to art and culture. The content of the workshops, created especially for this project, are tailored to the needs and interests of children and teenagers of different age groups.
“We are delighted that, thanks to the generous support of AK WIEN – with which we enjoy a long-standing, successful cooperation –, we are not only able to continue our targeted art education programs for children and teenagers but have even managed to expand them. Along with our established workshops for school children, our team of art educators will now also provide programs for kids aged two to six at kindergarten and preschool level, affording even our very youngest exhibition-goers the opportunity to benefit from our educational work. Around 130 workshops will provide some 2,340 children without ready access to cultural education to delve into the fascinating world of Vienna 1900 under the expert guidance of our art educators free of charge, offering them a particularly vivid art experience.”
Hans-Peter Wipplinger, Director of the Leopold Museum
“It is with great enthusiasm that we embark on the sixth year of our cooperation with the Leopold Museum. Owing to this initiative, the Leopold Museum and AK WIEN were in a position last year to offer more than 2,300 pupils and apprentices participation in the museum’s Youth Discovers Vienna 1900 programs free of charge. In the school year of 2025/26, we are able to offer entirely new programs, for instance the workshop Mystery! Between Science and Magic on the temporary exhibition Hidden Modernism for kids aged 12 to 19, as well as the first art education program for children at kindergarten and preschool level on Vienna 1900, called Multicolored Play of Forms. These days, many families are on a tight budget, as inflation continues to hit especially families with children. Thus, it is all the more important to the Chamber of Labour to make art more accessible to people living in Vienna. In this way, we can enrich the lives of children and teenagers without putting additional financial strain on their parents.”
Renate Anderl, President of the Chamber of Labour Vienna and the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour
The point of departure for our Youth Discovers Vienna 1900 programs is the permanent presentation Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism, featuring works by eminent artists, including Gustav Klimt, Broncia Koller-Pinell, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann. The exhibition affords exciting insights into life in Vienna over 120 years ago – an important era that shaped the city Viennese children and teenagers live in today.
