Enjoying Summer at the Leopold Museum with PORR

In the summer of 2025, the Leopold Museum showcases highlights of art in Vienna around 1900 on two exhibition floors, featuring works from Jugendstil to Expressionism, including masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Broncia Koller-Pinell, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Richard Gerstl, Oskar Kokoschka, and many others. The exquisite exhibits from the Leopold Collection, along with prominent permanent loans, afford the unique opportunity to delve into the singular atmosphere of the fin-de-siècle – an era whose groundbreaking artistic, intellectual and social advancements are still as fascinating today as ever.

Vienna 1900: Emphasis on Urban Development and Architecture

The many themes of the permanent exhibition Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism include urban development and architecture. This emphasis is also highlighted during the free guided tours offered as part of the PORR NIGHT initiative. The construction of the Vienna Ringstraße, which constituted the most comprehensive urban development project in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, led to a significant extension and concentration of the City of Vienna. The First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline, which was inaugurated in 1873 by Emperor Franz Joseph, supplied the entire Danube metropolis with clean drinking water, and went hand in hand with the construction of a huge system of water supply lines and sewage canals. Around 1900, the Vienna City Railway started operating, originally using steam-powered trains. Parts of the line of this interurban railway are used to this day by the Vienna underground and municipal railway.

Additional PORR NIGHT Highlight: The Major Schiele Exhibition Times of Change

Egon Schiele, who created his oeuvre over a period of less than ten years, is most famous for the key paintings and drawings he created from 1910, in which he processed his own mental states and, based on the human figure, addressed the self-questioning of an entire generation. Schiele’s later oeuvre, which he created from 1914 and which differs distinctly from his earlier works, is much less known. During those later years, his strokes became calmer, and his figures gained physical presence and realism. The changes that occurred in his private life and the historical events that happened from 1914 onwards – the outbreak of war, his wedding to Edith Harms (1893–1918) and his difficult life as a soldier – had a lasting impact on his oeuvre. The Leopold Museum’s exhibition Times of Change. Egon Schiele’s Last Years: 1914–1918 is the first to shine the spotlight on the artist’s work from 1914 to his untimely death at the age of only 28 in October 1918. Featuring 130 works from international museums and private collections, the presentation weaves together biographical and artistic aspects, and presents the previously unpublished diary of his wife Edith Schiele for the first time. The upcoming PORR NIGHT offers visitors free admission to this major Schiele exhibition, which is only on display until 13th July.
