Enjoying a special evening at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM

The company PORR offers all art enthusiasts the opportunity to spend a special evening at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM: The permanent presentation Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism allows visitors to delve into the unique atmosphere of "Vienna around 1900" and affords exciting insights into the extraordinary achievements during this time in the fields of art, culture, science, urban development and architecture.

"Vienna around 1900". A changing city

The construction of the Vienna Ringstrasse in the second half of the 19th century was the largest urban development project in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city was changing, with the number of inhabitants in Vienna constantly rising. The former city gates were opened to incorporate the surrounding suburbs. As a result, the metropolis Vienna experienced a huge expansion in size, and the population density increased rapidly. The implementation of the Emperor Franz Joseph Mountain Spring Pipeline in 1873 ensured a supply of clean drinking water across the city. Large-scale projects, such as the extension of Vienna’s sewer system and the building of the Vienna city railway, attracted thousands of laborers from the crown territories and Italy. The route of the originally steam-powered urban train is still used today by the Vienna underground line U6.

Free guided tours “powered by PORR”

The guided tours:

> THE VIENNA RINGSTRASSE AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY

The construction of the 5.3-km boulevard under Emperor Franz Joseph not only changed the face of the city but is also exemplary for the large-scale urban development projects carried out in Vienna around 1900. Along the new traffic routes, public and private buildings were erected and decorated by the great artists of the time.

> FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF LOOS, HOFFMANN AND WAGNER – ARCHITECTURAL GENIUSES OF MODERNISM

These three eminent architects of the fin de siècle shaped the image of Vienna as a modern metropolis unlike any other. With their pioneering achievements in urban planning, architecture and design, which continue to have an effect today, they set entirely new standards and laid the foundations for a modern way of life.

The program of the PORR NIGHTS at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM will be shaped by changing thematic emphases with a focus on urban development and architecture, and will include public lectures, discussions and film screenings.
