The Leopold Museum is dedicating a large-scale exhibition to the theme of fashion within the context of the Gesamtkunstwerk Vienna 1900. Titled MODERN FASHION. Wiener Werkstätte & Paris, the presentation will explore the development of Viennese fashion from around 1900 to approximately 1930. As early as the late nineteenth century, Henry van de Velde and Anna Muthesius heralded a revolution in fashion: the rejection of the corset and the introduction of the reform dress marked a significant paradigm shift in European women’s clothing.

The exhibition will focus on the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte, founded in 1911, and will shed light in particular on the fruitful exchange between Vienna and Paris, the fashion capital par excellence. Paul Poiret, the “King of Fashion” at the time, who worked closely with artists, maintained contact with the Wiener Werkstätte. Fashion designer Emilie Flöge traveled regularly to Paris to study current trends, and the Wiener Werkstätte participated in international exhibitions with its fashion and numerous other products.

Works by Sonia Delaunay, Raoul Dufy, Emilie Flöge, Mathilde Flögl, Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt, Mela Koehler, Otto Lendecke, Maria Likarz-Strauss, Koloman Moser, Dagobert Peche, Paul Poiret, Egon Schiele, and Eduard Wimmer-Wisgrill will be featured in the exhibition.
