Egon Schiele Documentation Centre
The Egon Schiele Documentation Centre was opened in memory of museum founder, donor and Schiele collector Professor Rudolf Leopold (1925–2010) on 7 April 2011. The Centre is based on the extensive archive of Professor Leopold, which he compiled beginning in 1972—primarily in connection with his project to publish a catalogue of Leopold’s Egon Schiele’s works—and which has since then been steadily expanded.
The material which continually enters the museum is archived, documented and made available for research on a constant basis. This material encompasses, in particular, written matter in Schiele’s own hand (compiled in the Egon Schiele Database of Autographs), as well as a comprehensive collection of historic and recent Schiele literature plus extensive documentation of Schiele’s artistic oeuvre and the environment in which he lived. A database of Schiele collectors and an updated edition of Rudolf Leopold’s catalogue of Schiele's paintings are currently in preparation.
University students and researchers are invited to participate in the continual growth of the Egon Schiele Documentation Centre. Six work/study spaces with modern equipment are available upon prior request every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Schiele research grants sponsored by the Association of Friends of the Leopold Museum will be awarded beginning in the autumn of 2011.
